Copenhagen
Copenhagen (København) is the capital of Denmark, home to around 600,000 people, with roughly 1.3 million living in the wider metropolitan area. It is regarded as one of the most livable cities in the world, though that reputation has also made it one of the more expensive. The city owes its appeal to plenty of green space, a clean harbor where you can actually swim, and attractive architecture. Highlights include Andersen's Little Mermaid, Tivoli, one of the oldest amusement parks still in operation with its nostalgic rides, Christiansborg Palace, now home to the Danish Parliament, and the Renaissance-era former stock exchange with its dragon spire, which looks like four dragon tails twisted together.
The city's green character is largely thanks to the Finger Plan, which guided growth along five major transport routes, the fingers, radiating from the center, the palm, and left open land for parks and recreation between them. Most Danes speak very good English, so getting around is easy for visitors. The relaxed, laid-back mentality of the Danes and the country's strong commitment to human rights make Copenhagen a comfortable and welcoming place for gay people to live in and to visit.
